8 Favourite Inspirational Travel Quotes

New Zealand

Often I find myself in the midst of an existential crisis – what am I doing with my life? Is this all there is? Is this where I want to be? When I start to think too much, I find it helpful to turn to the wise words of people much more intelligent and smarter than myself. I take the same approach when I’m looking for travel inspiration, advice or even a tiny shot of bravery before a big trip. Here are eight of my favourite quotes that inspire me to explore this great big world.

1. Louis C.K

“I’m bored’ is a useless thing to say. I mean, you live in a great, big, vast world that you’ve seen none percent of. Even the inside of your own mind is endless; it goes on forever, inwardly, do you understand? The fact that you’re alive is amazing, so you don’t get to say ‘I’m bored.”

2. Mark Jenkins

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.”

3. Mark Twain

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

4. Anderson Cooper

“The farther you go, however, the harder it is to return. The world has many edges, and it’s easy to fall off.”

5. Wendell Berry

“Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves does it become common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.”

6. Anonymous

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”

7. Bill Bryson

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.”

8. Lin Yutang

“No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.”
